Updated: Aug 2, 2023

Day 1 of the Lexus British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships saw 7 British players take to the courts at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre.

Defending quad singles champion Andy Lapthorne raced to a 6-1 6-0 win over fellow countryman Oliver Cox in 43 minutes. Lapthorne will face Australian Heath Davidson in the quarter-finals in a repeat of the 2022 quad singles final. Supported by the LTA’s Elite Wheelchair Programme, Lapthorne said: "It’s really good to get through the first match. Obviously I’m defending champion this year, so it’s nice to get off to a winning start and to win in straight sets is always key.”

18 year-old Ben Bartram advanced to the second round of the men's singles with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Frenchman Nicolas Charrier, marking his first senior level win at the Lexus British Open. Bartram, who is a former British Open Junior Champion, will next face Argentinian second seed Gustavo Fernandez.

However, it wasn't meant to be for Richard Green who lost out in his opening round encounter to Koji Sugeno 6-0, 6-1, while Dermot Bailey was defeated by Kouhei Suzuki 6-1, 6-4.

Rounding up Day 1 action, former world No.1 Gordon Reid progressed to the quarter-finals with victory over a determined Sergei Lysov 6-4 6-2 to the delight of the British fans on centre court.
