Sarah Storey and Fran Brown headline at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships

Great Britain paralympic great Sarah Storey once again stole the headlines as she racked up another gold and won her 36th top prize on the world stage as the 45-year-old stormed to victory in the UCI World Championships in Dumfries beating her closest rival – in Australia’s Alana Foster by a minute in the C5 individual time trial event. Fellow Brit Morgan Newberry finished fifth and the bronze medal was taken by Heidi Gauguin of France.

Despite starting second the British rider crossed the line in a time of 39:48.89. In the other time trial events for men, Britain’s Finley Graham finished in second place in the C3 individual time trial event just behind Germany’s Matthias Schindler as the Brit took his fifth overall medal in the recently concluded world championships. In the men’s individual T2 time trial category Felix Barrow claimed Bronze as the Southampton native finished behind Germany’s Maximilian Jager and Belgium’s Tim Celen.
The road race events for men once again saw Britain’s Finlay Graham win his second gold medal of this world championships as the 23-year-old finished ahead of France’s Thomas Darte and his fellow countryman Ben Watson who finished third in the C3 70.2 km road race event. The C4 and C5 road race events too saw British athletes with podium finishes as Archie Atkinson finished third in the men’s C4 81.9 km road race event and William Bjergfelt won gold in the men’s C5 81.9 km road race event.
In the other women’s time trial events, Britain’s Fran Brown continued her sublime form as she clinched her fourth gold medal of the cycling world championships by winning the C1 10.8 km time trial event. China’s Qian Wangwei her closest competitor in the track events finished second and Britain’s Katie Toft took bronze home. In the C2 class of women’s 10.8 km time trial event, Amelia Cass finished third behind Germany’s Maike Hausberger and Switzerland’s Flurina Rigling. Some of the other time trial events saw Sophie Unwin and her pilot Jenny Holl win a silver medal as they finished behind Ireland’s Katie-George Dunlevy who was accompanied by her pilot Linda Kelly.

The road race events for women saw Fran Brown winning her second gold medal of the road championships as the 38-year-old won her second gold medal as she won the 70.2 km road race in the C1 category. Her world championship dominance was matched by Sarah Storey as the Cheshire native came back in vengeance to claim her 18th world title after she had missed the 2022 event due to injury as she won the C5 road race event. The last of the medals for Great Britain came in the form of Sophie Unwin and her pilot Jenny Holl as the two-time Paralympic world champion finished third in the 105.3 km road race event.
